It started innocently enough, as a twitter post asking if I could get an iPhone with no voice plan required. I barely use voice, but I could see myself rolling in data with the interweb at my fingertips (and Skype for the occasional voice call).
Then @landnorth (and @emd) suggested that I look into the iPad + 3G when it hit Canadian shores. I did some quick searching and both Bell and Rogers have announced their data plans for the iPad. No contract required, just pay and go.
This presents an interesting position for the iPad here in Whitehorse - assuming the price point is the same across Canada - as there are other options available for mobile data.
Navigo provides an almost mobile 3G experience, it requires a giant box of a modem, network cable and a power outlet. Not really fair to compare against an iPad but I am looking at data rates here.

Latitude data rates are incredibly confusing so let's only compare to the Unlimited Data plans - which I assume apply to a device like the Palm Pre as well as the Blackberry devices. The Latitude Wireless website is a blackhole of clarity and insight.

* note that the Terms of Service on Unlimited plan from Latitude restricts streaming - kind of a common task on an iPad.
In Whitehorse, the options are only Latitude (but with streaming restrictions), Navigo (with giant cumbersome hardware), or the Bell 3G plan (and no contract). Then I thought what if I could get an iPhone *unlocked* on an iPad data plan?

Now, if I can get an iPhone without a contract AND I can get it on an iPad data plan then I am golden.

Fri 05/28/10 by emdGetting an iPhone is not hard. Getting it unlocked is possible if you don't have the current baseband, so be careful when buying. However, iPhones are expensive to buy.
And I doubt you can get the iPad plan on an iPhone as the iPad has a micro-SIM and the iPhone has a normal SIM, and I bet Rogers/Bell/whomever will only put those plans on a micro-SIM card.
As another thought, you might be able get a Pay-as-you-go voice plan and a data plan. Just a thought.
