iMac : why I want it, iPod with Video : why I don't

Well, the wait has passed and the new Apple hardware has been pushed out the door. The announcement was very well contained so all news was not streamed in a blow by blow fashion.

Since the entire blogosphere is probably exploding with commentary I will keep this to things I have noticed.

iMac points:

  • the iMac finally has a decent video card that isn't obsolete on the day it is introduced. I want the 20" version please. With at least 1GB of RAM thanks
  • the iMac no longer has a modem built in. 49$ extra for a USB dongle
  • the iMac still only does mirroring, hopefully this can be worked around as previous models have
  • the mini-VGA connector should be a DVI, also from my view it appears that the connector will interfere with the stand, maybe in real life this is not the case
  • hopefully the quality problems (fan noise, power problems, over heating) do not manifest themselves in this revision

iPod points:

  • no more firewire, oh well, until I get a new computer (with USB 2.0) I won't be buying an iPod
  • 20 hrs of battery life!! Finally!!
  • thinner, lighter, bigger screen. the usual

Apple Remote points:

  • it uses infra-red (line of sight). meh. Personally, I can't wait until Salling Clicker (which I just updated to 3.0 for free!) works with Front Row!

iPod Video Rant...
I personally don't see a push for video on an iPod. Think of where you currently listen to an iPod. On the bus, subway or walking down the street. The only telltale sign that you are packing a 'pod is the white earbud headphones (which I would replace with my Shure's). Now, put you, your $400+ device and your inability to hear in a dodgy part of town or near a transit stop; someone grabs the device from your hands and is off. That would be a major bummer to say the least.
I appreciate the push to be first to offer TV and music video's but movies are a long way off yet for those of you drooling in the back. A 16:9 screen with HD output, faster broadband/downloads, and a lot of lawyers are in the way of that particular innovation.

So in closing, iMac : YES, iPod : yes (but not for the video).
